The Race

Think of the toughest, most powerful and most reliable 4 × 4, all-terrain vehicle in the world. Now imagine the opposite. With one less wheel, a lot less control, half a horse power engine under the bonnet, and three completely inexperienced drivers, the humble ‘Rickshaw’ is undoubtedly the ultimate long distance, off-road, competitive racing machine. Some may argue to the contrary. Now imagine trying to get this (enormously) fallible Tuk-Tuk 3000km (at least) across India, over mountains, through deserts, along coast lines and finally through the backwater swamps on to our final destination of Kerala. This is an unsupported adventure which wobbles over thousands of miles of ridiculous Indian terrain. This is the probably most insane yet possibly the best thing you (well actually ‘we’) could do with two weeks. This is ‘The Rickshaw Run 2012’.
This is just a brief overture of what we will be embarking upon in January 2012. The ‘race’ starts on New Year’s Day and ends a few weeks later. Eighty four teams of 1 – 3 people have entered the race already and although a podium finish would be awesome we are just hoping that we will have the good fortune and perseverance to reach the finish line with all our limbs intact, and still speaking to one another. We have already bought a Tuk-Tuk, and are planning on using it to get through as much of India as possible whilst strengthening already great friendships and forging life long memories and experiences (the majority of which will hopefully be positive!).
